CITIES AND IDENTITIES: NARRATIVES, HERITAGE AND MEMORIES.This paper derives from the idea that today’s metropolis is an (hiper)space where social trajectories and signs of belongingness are continuously mixing together and redefining themselves. This fast transmutation of social identities —a process called “creative destruction of identities”— is correlated and analyzed in the light of contemporary cultural changes. In a context in which social identities seem to give way to temporary states of social identification, one can argue that even the historical and cultural heritage of the cities, mainly their ruins, monuments and museums, submitted to the rules of aestheticization and commodification, are now facing the question of their own identity. As a matter of fact, the past itself has become a commodity and therefore the historical and cultural praise of the city can hardly distinguish it from the fair.

PROBLEMS CONCERNING LEGACY RESTITUTION. AN ANTROPOLOGICAL STANDPOINT.The article approaches diverse problems in regards to the idea of cultural legacy as “legacy for all”. The aspirations to represent social matters as a whole, contained in various definitions of legacy, turn out to become questionable, when seen as a social construction mediated by different sorts of cultural institutions. The concern of the symbolic work made by the State conservation agencies, the capitalist market and the technical-scientific conventions, allows the conceptualization of legacy as a field of negotiations and conflicts ruled by a great leading paradox. Because in legacy, culture and its agents recognize themselves as subjects, but they actually are constituted as objects of the mentioned mediation system.

ANTHROPOLOGY AND CULTURAL HERITAGE. A FALLEN MONUMENTS’ STUDY.The essay presents some results of an anthropological field research concerning war memorials, developed in the city of Naples in the last five years. The author first introduces the main historical and theoretic aspects regarding these monuments; she then analyses their present social uses in order to find out their symbolic meaning and value for social subjects. As the author points up, the observation of commemorative ceremonies in honour of the fallen shows that the dialectic between functions and uses of these monuments is in reference to the field of power relationships.
